Result: Whites 8 – 0 St Pauls

Cup Round 2 saw Whites 1B faced St Pauls 3B and also saw the return of the Jon George to the 2018 season. The midfield had a few sloppy mistakes in the first half but completely dominated possession with Lewis, Yeni kept ticking the game along, keeping them nailed back defending their 18 yard box. Oly opened the scoring with an intelligent run in behind to slot the first. Still need to work on delivery wide into the box it seems, though Joe did come up with an excellent cross which Jon  slightly miss timed his header ,still hitting the target. He would make up for it in the second half. One scare came as Martins came out but didn’t collect just before half time, producing St Pauls only  only real shot. Although we should have probably put a few more away in the first half by dominating possession and wearing the opposition down, the second half would open up as we starting to press forward and become a bit more direct knowing they would struggle to counter. 7 further goals would follow as the wide players made some more intelligent runs and crosses in the second half. Of note Joe Windows scored 2 goals, 1 from foot and the other a nice header at the back post. Jon finished with 4 as Ellery watched on wishing he could smack a few in I’m sure. Crab came in to grab an assist and play the holding midfield role and I tried to dribble as many players as possible and not cut back for Bate. Sorry Bate’s I owe you one. Alli got forward and slotted to complete the 8-0 win. St Pauls played in good spirit knowing they were a little out gunned in this one. Best on the day JonG, Yeni JR, and Joe in the second half.

Some long overdue half-centuries were racked up over the past few weeks.  Conan Shao finally hit 50 after 5 years at the club.  However George Tan surely takes the prize for the longest time to get to 50: his first game with the Whites was back in 2009.  George has played in all five Whites sides, and scored the first ever goal for the E’s in their opening match this year.

On the other end of the spectrum Max Demianyk will hit 50 if he plays against Pembroke this week, after joining the club in 2015.

Today the D’s have the short trip to Adelaide high to take on Uni SA.

It’s a fantastic day not a cloud in the sky and we can expect all the skills to be on display!

With the champions league final on tonight there may be some inspiration for some cracking goals and play. Pitch is dry and huge! Extremely wide so there will be some tried boys at the end of this one. The tale of the tape is the Whites coming off a impressive 5-0 victory and Uni SA struggling so far this season.

The lads in good spirits as they look to jump up the table with a solid win today!

And we’re off!

Whites look good early and just finding their passing game but well on top! George finds Arron he cuts down the right and a beautiful through ball and Johnny with a clinical finish. 1 nil whites!!!

Defense of the whites owning the ball and starting to open them up with some great passing!

Uni SA under pressure and as they pass the ball back it’s a bit short and Johnny slips in and gets his foot to it, chips the keeper for number 2!!!!

Whites continue to dominate and make a couple of subs to give the other guys a go! Sammy impassable in fact the whole defense has been rock solid.

Whites keep the pressure up and a couple of havoc balls have to keeper out of position but the shots are blocked.

Close to half time and it’s a matter of when’s the next goal is coming!!!

In the middle and Matty out battles their captain and Abdul places a perfect ball and Hamood (without his glasses he just broke) slots it in with a quality finish!

The pressure has been the key as Uni SA cannot cope plus their skills are below par!

3 nil whites

Half time and it’s a dominating performance so far from the whites!

Second half needs to see more of the same and a minimum 5 goals again this week will be the goal.

Second half underway and Uni SA have their best period of the match with some solid ball control. The whites need to show some patience and build the attacks.

Whites settle into their work and are looking better now with more time on the ball. Their passing is back up to standard but not getting the final touches to open them up.

On the counter they go deep in their box and they get one back

Whites work it out of defense and Ismail wins a ball on the wing, takes it all the way and snaps it back to Johnny and he again adds the quality finish needed from a striker for 4-1
Whites. That’s his hatrick!!!

Andre tireless in the middle field has been very good.

Jan takes a free kick and it’s a hand ball off a rebound on the edge of the box? But it’s blocked. The boys have lifted their effort after the Uni SA’s goals. There’s been 4 shots just missing in the second half that could have been scored.

It’s been a solid performance but I am sure we could have have a couple more.

Full time and 4 points in the bank! Call outs to Mo, Kirstin and Sammy in defense however All played well.

Round 2 of the cup saw the White’s D’s take on Rostrevor B’s who are sitting 3rd in Div 1B. Obviously there’s a few divisions separarting the 2 teams, but anything’s possible in the Cup!

There were wholesale changes from the team that drew with top of the table Immanuel; Abdul, Martins, Sam and Marc were pulled up to the C’s, Kirsten and Michael went even further to the B’s, while the coach Matt was asked to don a shirt in the A’s.

Fortunately at the moment the D’s squad is enormous (which has now spawned a 5th team), so Matt had no problem locating 15 players for the game.

I forgot to do a Dave Wilson & have a quick look at our opponents pre-game, so no comment can be made on the hair-cuts, beer guts or general preparation of our opponents. The Whites warm-up was good though, with the customary game prior to kick-off being pretty quick & physical.

The coach made a tactical move for us to bottle up the midfield and plan to hurt Rostrevor on the break for this game, Kevin came in up front to try to inject a bit of pace, and with Ishmael, Homood and Aaron, our game plan was to hold Rostrevor at bay and then release our speedsters quickly whenever we got the chance.

Early on Rostrevor gained the ascendancy both with the ball and in general field position, but generally we were holding on well. Ishmael and Aaron proved to be a real handful for the Rostrevor defenders & we soon had a corner. Bobby’s ball to the back post was perfect & Kevin rose to meet it, only for his header to fly just a touch too high.. opportunity missed.

Not long after Sangers made an excellent tackle, but injured his ankle, bringing Stefan on at right back.
Around this time Rostrevor got the breakthrough, with their midfielders regularly overlapping, they managed a sweet one two, which allowed their midfielder to score from about 10 yards.

We continued to press & for the remainder of the half, with Homood and Ishmael managing shots, but nothing to really worry their keeper, whilst Rostrevor were restricted to a couple of blasts from 25 yards that were hopeful at best.

At the break, Matt was very happy with our endeavour, and asked us to stick with the defensive tactics for another 20 mins, after which we’d go for the win!

The boys continued to play well – with Andre and Bobby stifling the Rostrevor midfield and our wingers continuing to make chances. We looked particularly dangerous at corners, with Homood and Rob both going close. Rostrevor did have 2 chances to kill the game. The first as the striker broke free to the left of goal, only for Rob to lay a solid tackle, and again the striker found room to the right of goal, only for Bas to make a brilliant save, taking the ball (and a knee to the head) along the way.

In the last 20, Rostrevor looked spent, Aaron L was swapped for Aaron C, and Johnny Wilson came on for Kevin.

Motassem, Homood and Ishmael linked up down the left, but Ish’s strike only found the side netting, but late in the game a free kick from Rob was well headed on by Bobby and with the ball on the 6 yard box Johnny Wilson swooped in to head the ball home over a lazy Rostrevor defender. The boys were ecstatic! Only for the linesman to call a completely inexplicable off-side! The referee conferred and eventually agreed… Absolutely Robbed!

In the end the result remained 1-0. A loss that almost felt like a win, particularly as we’d scored against highly ranked opponents only for a pretty average decision to ruin our day.

Only positives to take out of the match though. Andre and Bobby were outstanding in the middle, our wingers Aaron and Ish ran rings around Rostrevor all day & the back line were solid all day.

The last few weeks have been solid, gutsy performances. I think this team has the quality to be very strong for the remainder of the year.

Bring on next week!

That’s it!

Congratulations to Chris ‘Crab’ Gayen, spiritual leader of the Whites ‘Drinking XI’, for reaching the 200 game milestone last week. Quite an achievement for a man who’d already played at 11 other clubs and had officially retired, before being coaxed back into football in 2004. Since then he’s managed to win  a couple of B’s Best & Fairest awards, be part of a Cup winning team & even coached for a season. Well done old man.

A big congratulations to Simon Clarke, Callum Davidson and Fairuz Jum’ee who all played their 50th games for the club on Saturday.  A great  day overall with 10 pts out of 12 for the Uni Whites.

And a belated congrats to Amir Khasanov who played his 50th against Windsor the week before.
