A self-described ladies man – he is the true “Cass-anova” of the Uni Whites.

After cutting his teeth as a junior at Lismore Thistles and Lennox Head Sharks – Cass was eventually lured to the glamour club with promises of big match payments, fast cars and fast women. Unfortunately – these were promises that would later prove to be false.

Now the lone Everton fan amongst the Whites – Cass, for some reason, lists his football hero as none other than Manchester United talisman – Ryan Giggs. It’s not hard to see why. With the exception of blistering pace, a decent left foot & Ryan’s penchant for backgammon – the resemblance is uncanny. Both Ryan & Cass are 31 years old.

“Mama” Cass has brought to the team his wealth of experience – and his extensive knowledge of fine wines. And just like a fine wine – Cass only expects to get better with age.

Famous Quote: “I’m open to bribery, a carton of pale and I’ll be yours for life.” – Cass during his wedding vows

(Note – Cass’ “carton of pale” comment may have been quoted out of context & may not have actually occurred during his nuptials).

One of the “new breed” of younger players recruited to the white army in ’07 – the one they call “Mani” marked his first appearance with a goal against Sacred Heart. With his lightning pace & sound touch – it shouldn’t be long before he adds to his scoring tally.

Injecting some more international flair into a squad that already draws influence from Europe, South America, Africa & Asia – Mani’s football mentors hail mostly from the mighty EPL. Man Utd’s Paul Scholes & Christiano Ronaldo top his list of favourite players.

Like most of the overseas/interstate imports, Mani has no time or interest in trying to understand AFL.

Having established himself in the B’s midfield, Mani is intent on making his mark for his first (and only) club – the mighty Whites!

Dave talks to Mani:
Your age?
I’m 20 years young

Your age when you started playing football?
One of my earliest memories is kicking a ball

Likes/Dislikes?
Likes include Manchester United, documentaries and brunettes. Dislikes include AFL, injuries and the feeling you get after eating at McDonalds.

Definitely right footed except for the odd shot here and there

“If there is no way, then we shall make a way!” Hannibal–218 B.C.

Winger or central midfield

Paul Scholes is a fantastic player, Cristiano Ronaldo is great to watch and Xabi Alonso is a complete midfielder. Among the whites, Chopper’s fitness and work rate are inspiring.

My first and to date only goal for the club away to Sacred Heart.

A recent poll unanimously voted this man “Best Dressed White” – a man who describes his nature as a mixture between a juvenile dolphin & an old sea turtle.

The “Jacques Cousteau” of the team, Juan has been a key part of the International revolution to have swept the Whites camp this year. Having previously played his football abroad with Sting 76 (USA), Rivadavia Club & Prepucio (Argentina), Juan’s eclectic mix of street-bred/club refined futbol credentials has seen him already slot home a few goals early in his Whites career.

A man who lists among his icons such players as Tevez & Maradona, Juan also draws inspiration each week from his more ‘mature’ comrades in white.

Juan’s skills also stretch far outside the confines of the football pitch. For fans of Argentinean BBQ meats – let it be known that our man in striped pants also cooks a mean ‘asado’.

Famous Quotes: “Trucks Rock” – The hat speaks for itself!

Dave talks to Juan:

Your age now?
30, look like 25, run like 40, get injured like 50!!

Your age when you first started playing football?
Started playing when I was 6 in the United states, College Station, Texas. At age 11 I was taken back to Argentina where I played in a club for a year, and after that it was all street and friends football. Played basketball, rugby, handball from 12 to 25, then on just indoor soccer at University of Buenos Aires. Until the whites came along.

Likes/Dislikes?
Likes: almost every sport (car racing doesn’t qualify as a sport), beers, wines, good food, especially ‘asado’ (argentine BBQ). Good looking women.
Dislikes: Idiots of all kind, wars, politicians, and the AFL.

Right or left footed?
Right footed, my left is only good to get injured.

Previous football clubs?
Little league (USA): STING 76. Argentina: Rivadavia Club (Concepcion del Uruguay). Indoor Argentina: Prepucio. Australia: The Glamorous White.

Favourite line or saying?
Going to war in the name of peace, is just as ridiculous as f*****g for virginity

Preferred position?
Right midfield, or right forward and in the future shouting on the sidelines in midfield (Coach, I’d love that someday)

Favourite players?
It’s more than obvious that Maradona has no competition. Now playing, Carlos Tevez (West Ham last season, probably moving now). In the white, I really admire the guys that are several years older than me and are still going and training and putting all into it!!

Your most proud Whites moment so far?
Haven’t had many moments yet, but there are two that I think I should highlight, one: not getting aggressive with the opponents nor our team-mates when we got our ass kicked by Mercedes in one of our first games. 2: the game we won against Unley, no one bet a cent on us winning that game, and we did it pretty nicely.

Describe yourself in just one sentence…
a man trying to reach the balance between and agile, juvenile, active dolphin and a quiet, relaxed, knowledged, thinking sea turtle; the perfect balance.

Hope I didn’t go over my head with this.

2007 has proven to be a challenging one so far for this ex Adelaide Comet. Having previously played as a defender – Josh, who rates winter as his least favourite season – decided to make a move to the only position that allows you to wear gloves & full length pants. Stepping into the formidable (and let’s face it – thankless) role of goalkeeper – Josh continues to refine his technique under the watchful eye of Whites goalkeeping stalwart – Dan Aikin (keep an ear out on the training pitch for those dulcet tones of constant ‘encouragement’).

In the tradition of great keepers before him (Grobbelaar, Schmeichel, Bresolin) – Josh has already proven his ability to “bring a man down”. The trick now will be to repeat those efforts sans red card.

Among his many highlights – Josh rates his clean sheet against Unley in his debut season 2006 right up there. With a bagful of clean sheets to his name already in ’07 – things are looking on-track for our man “between the sticks”.

Dave talks to Josh:

Your age now?
27

Your age when you first started playing football?
25

Likes/Dislikes?
Like most stuff. Dislike vegetarian ex-striker deaf, blind, mute & wheelchair ridden umpires who listen to operatic dance music in their traffic congesting soft-roader!

Right or left footed?
Right (though many would say I have 2 left feet!)

When did you join the Whites?
Last year

Previous football clubs?
Adelaide Comets (2005) – played as defender (basically the role you have been doing so far this year)

Favourite line or saying?
Hmmmmm, probably would’ve done that slightly differently if I had the chance again.

Preferred position?
Striker! (preferably sitting on top of them having just caught the ball and taken them out in one fluid simultaneous awe inspiring [non red card inspiring] motion.)

Favourite players?
Just enjoy watching soccer!!

Your most proud Whites moment so far?
Clean sheet in 4-0 win against unley (who are currently top of the table) last year.

Describe yourself in just one sentence…
Whatever.

It’s been a long & arduous road to the Stadium of White for this relative newcomer – who took up the beautiful game at the tender age of 5. With a playing history that includes stints at Salisbury City, Fulham Utd & Western District Toros – Ryan truly feels he has found a home within the family-friendly club. Seems the mighty “Junior Whites” squad has found a couple more recruits…

Ryan’s attacking flair has seen him begin to form an intimidating partnership with fellow front man – Chris Baxter. This duo is sure to cause a few defence lines some nightmares in the months to come.

A man whose football idols include such legends as Rooney, Ronaldo & our very own Jim Muir (way to wrap the coach!) – Ryan is looking to remain injury-free & instil a “legacy of success” in the squad.

Glad to have you aboard tiger…

Dave talks to Ryan:

Your age now?
23

Your age when you first started playing football?
Tender age of 5

Likes/Dislikes?
likes – anything soccer, dislikes – anything not soccer

Right or left footed?
Right footed

Previous football clubs?

  • 2007 Uni Whites
  • 2006-07 Western District Toros (joined aged 22 – never actually played a proper match with them due to first year with club sustaining calf injury, then losing my license for various speeding offences, something I’m proud to say I do not do any more, and then having our second child, all in the space of about a month),
  • 1998-99 Fulham United (aged 15 playing in the adult team – was quite a buzz to be that young and still getting subbed on to play in an adult environment),
  • 1995-96 Salisbury City White (joined aged 11),
  • 1991-94 Elizabeth Vale Hornets (joined aged 8),
  • 1988-90 Elizabeth Grove Juniors (joined aged 5)

Favourite line or saying?
Imagine all the AFL players of yesterday and today, and now take away footy and imagine that instead they were introduced to soccer, what quality our country would have!!

Preferred position?
Striker, attacking midfielder, right winger

Favourite players?
Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Fernando Torres, Jim Muir (Whites coach – I personally think he’s the best I have ever had the pleasure of being coached by)

Your most proud Whites moment so far?
I’m two games in since I joined 3 weeks ago, nothing spectacular has happened for me yet.

Describe yourself in just one sentence…
Simply mad about soccer, my gorgeous family, and to achieve the most so I can leave a legacy of success wherever I go.
